Dusable Museum of African American History

Mobile Museum

Hop on the DuSable Museum’s 26’ long mobile museum for an interactive exhibit which explores the life and times of Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, an African Haitian, who in 1779 became the first non-native person to establish a permanent settlement in Eschikagou (“the place of smelly onions”), which we now call Chicago.

Disney Pixar STEM Exhibit

MSI brings their new exhibit, “The Science Behind Pixar” to the Silver Room Block Party! Get a unique look into the Pixar process, and explore the science and technology behind these beloved animated films and their characters. “The Science Behind Pixar” is an interactive exhibition showcasing the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts used by the artists and computer scientists who help bring Pixar’s award-winning films to the big screen.

Hashtag Lunchbag is a local non-profit humanity service movement dedicated to eliminating hunger in Chicago and across the globe, one lunch bag at a time. The group feeds 1,000 men, women, and children each month – every bag is packed with a healthy lunch and a personal, inspiring note – write your own note with the Hashtag Lunch bag team and learn how to get involved.

Join professional natural hair cosmetologist, Nina Christmas, and the N.E.C team in a hair care experience for children and young adults during the Silver Room Block Party! Nina and her team of natural hair stylists are here teaching the art of adornment and hair braiding to children young and old!  They will also offer free natural hair consultations and hair care tips for all textures of hair.

Mural Painting and Paper Bag Puppets

1-4 p.m.

The Hyde Park Art Center functions as an amplifier for today and tomorrow’s creative voices, providing the space to cultivate and create new work and connections. Visual artist Tyler McClelland will work with kids to make their own amazing paper bag puppets AND muralist Dorian Sylvain will guide the kids in a mural art piece on the wall of the famous Valois Cafeteria.

Music Jam Session

Join the staff of Marsha’s Music for family music jam sessions from 2-6 p.m. This Hyde Park music school runs the “Music Together” program, serving children from 0-8 years old (babies, toddlers, pre-K, and K-2). Our musical immersion helps your child grow from primary music development to basic music competence, learning to sing in tune and keep a beat, through play and community. This process sets the groundwork for children understanding the language of music. As they grow older, learning and music making builds upon this musical connection in more formal areas like private instruction, school choirs/bands/orchestras, and social music activities.  There will be drums, maracas, bells, etc., and fun!

Spanki will also offer her own style of painting and art.

Teddy Bear Clinic

Children can walk in the shoes of health professionals of Comers Children Hospital by guiding their teddy bear “patient” through a hospital/clinic experience! Kids can become familiar with medical equipment, resolve common misunderstandings about the health care environment, and families can learn how to lay the foundation for making healthy choices!

Kids will be led through a wonderful painting experience to promote creative skills and imagination with founder and early childhood educator, Shae Turner. The Abstract and Apple Juice Team will conduct two sessions of painting at 4 and 5 p.m. Space is limited, so please sign up. Kids will be provided canvases, paintbrushes, and art supplies to create their own masterpiece!

Join Sista Afya for a special day of coloring! Children will color pages from their Mental Wellness Warrior Coloring Book and engage in small activities to learn about mental wellness, in the most developmentally appropriate way. Families will also be accompanied by guest mental wellness professionals to discuss behavioral and physiological development in children and adolescents. Robert Burford “Bob the Bubble Man”

Bob the Bubble man will be spreading bubble blessings and bubbles of joy in the “Beautiful Kids” area. He loves the Hyde Park area and you may already have seen him walking the streets sharing his talent for bubbles with everyone. When asked why he makes bubbles, Bob says, “I like to see people smile” – and he’s great at it!
